I do hope you all survived the storms. We watched as the neighbour’s spruce (Christmas Tree from years ago), swayed and buffeted by the ferocity of the wind started to wiggle its roots! Rocking and swaying to the tuneless roar. Thankfully it stayed upright but we all scurried out to move the cars….just in case.
Whilst driving to work the other morning (well in a queue at the traffic lights) I was gazing round at the amazing sight of the river in flood. It had oozed over its banks in silent slinkiness and wrapped itself round a clump of Willows, silver in the morning light. Pools of mercury as far as the eye could see.
A little further along this chocolate box village I noticed 3 tiny Aubretia flowers, they looked like little gems of amethyst against the pale green leaves, low down, almost touching the narrow strip of concrete that serves as a footpath to those who dare! I wondered how many others had seen them, this after all is January.
Which leads me to thinking……those in cars see very little, those on bicycles see a little more, rabbits grazing in the fields for instance (yes, I know, a bit woolly but did you spot the little black one?). Those on foot have the potential to see much more, even climb the gate and into the field….watch ladybirds and other insects busily at work and overhead, watch as the Red Kite wheels and soars elegantly, effortless in the search for food. If stepping softly you may be lucky enough to see a deer, fox or some other traveller. For those who do not venture out at all, what a world they are missing. There are two ways of travelling anywhere it seems to me. With eyes wide open, or eyes wide shut. If you drive, please do keep your eyes on the road!
